Christendom Graduate School offers a basic-level certificate, the “Initial Certificate for Peoria Catechists” upon completion of the following two courses, which are offered in conjunction with the Catholic Education Center, LLC. EDUC 630 (Teaching the Faith, part I) and EDUC 631 (Teaching the Faith, part II) are always available online and may be taken at any time according the student’s convenience, including the summer, without regard to semesters. EDUC 630: TEACHING THE FAITH, PART I: An introduction to Catholic religious education, including the ministry of catechetics, key Old and New Testament figures and events, the Creed and the seven Sacraments, based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, with practical and creative ways to implement these teachings in a classroom. EDUC 631: TEACHING THE FAITH, PART II: A continuation of EDUC 630 focusing on the moral life (commandments, virtues, and beatitudes) and the life of prayer (with examination of several prayers and devotions throughout the liturgical year) and how to teach them. The course concludes with the role of catechesis in the mission of Church as seen in the General Directory of Catechesis. Students do not need to take these courses for graduate credit in order to qualify for the initial certificate, although they must take them for graduate credit if they wish to apply them toward the Christendom Certificate and/or the MA degree. Students who take them for credit may apply them towards teaching licensure. Students who take these courses on an audit basis (not for graduate credit) and who later decide they want to apply them towards the MA or Christendom Certificate may fulfill additional requirements in order to receive graduate credit. Students may register for these courses at any time, and are expected to complete them within four months of registering. After completion, students who are Peoria Diocese Catechists may apply to the Sheen Foundation for partial reimbursement of tuition for these two courses. You will receive verification of your registration as well as a user name and password to enter the online classroom by email (please add us to your address book: catholiceducationcenter@yahoo.com) .
